The goal of this Portland home remodel was to customize the space for a growing family while restoring the original charm that had been altered in the 1980s. In addition to the visible renovations, we strategically prepared the basement for a future finish by installing rough-ins for plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and venting.
Upstairs Transformation
The upper level originally consisted of two rooms with only one private bedroom. We reconfigured the layout by building a second bedroom at the top of the stairs and converting the landing into a small foyer. In the larger bedroom, we added a compact full bathroom and walk-in closet. The original stairwell was meticulously restored, and all finishes were either replaced or brought back to life in keeping with the home’s character.

Main Level Renovation
On the main level, we reclaimed a bedroom that had been removed in a previous remodel, restoring a more functional layout. Combined with the upstairs work, this converted the home from a 1 bed / 1 bath into a 3 bed / 2 bath. The kitchen was completely gutted and redesigned, including relocating appliances and removing a chimney that limited both kitchen and upstairs functionality. The main bathroom was also fully renovated.

Basement Prep & Interim Use
While the basement finish was deferred, we completed key upgrades to support a future build-out. The concrete floors were ground, polished, and sealed with a clear epoxy, and the entire space was painted white to create a clean, usable family area with additional storage in the meantime.
Exterior Restoration
The exterior makeover included removing vinyl siding to restore the original siding beneath—requiring detailed carpentry to repair areas previously cut or damaged. At the rear of the home, a failing sunroom structure was rebuilt into a stable, functional space with proper framing, insulation, and heat. The restored fireplace allows for year-round use. To visually distinguish it from the main house, the sunroom and garage were finished in black, inside and out.
